Jackson-Madison County’s finest honored as officers of the year
JACKSON, Tenn. — First responders in Jackson-Madison County were honored Thursday afternoon for their contributions to the community.
“I didn’t know I was going to be here until a short time ago,” Madison County Deputy Jeremy Yarber said. “I didn’t know why I was going to be here.”
Four first responders thought they were just guests at an afternoon luncheon, but to their surprise they were all honored as officers of the year.
The Kiwanis Club of Jackson strives to make the community safer for the kids. For nearly 60 years, members have honored first responders from the city of Jackson and Madison County who uphold that mission.
“To improve the life of children we need to improve everyone’s life in the community, and that’s why these first responders are so important to improve and keep us all safe,” Kiwanis Club President Annette Wilson said.
“I want to tell y’all the Jackson Police Department is working our butts off every day to keep the city safe. We’re doing everything possible,” Sgt. Justin Harris said.
Honorees included Sgt. Harris, Madison County Fire Capt. Robert Ward, Jackson firefighter Chad Hart and Deputy Jeremy Yarber. They all were described as leaders who go above and beyond the call of duty daily.
Each year, commanding officers within the respective departments pick a winner, which Madison County Fire Chief Eric Turner says is a tall task.
“It’s tough on us, the supervisors, to pick one individual when there’s so many that would be eligible for this,” Turner said.
After Hart accepted his award, he charged others to continue their positive work in the community.
“To make a difference in your community, it has to start with a decision. It’s something in your community, something in your workplace that can be changed. Find out what that is,” Hart said.
Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist announced during the luncheon plans for Blue Strong 2017, which he says will start in December, right after the Christmas parade as city buildings and businesses will be lit in blue.
