Tomcats look to become special

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn — The Haywood Tomcats finished last season 6-5, that included a first round exit in the playoffs. This year the team sets its sights on going above and beyond a regular team.

Coach Steve Hookfin said they preach to their players, “if it ain’t perfect, it ain’t right.” It’s a mindset the players need to have if they expect to go further in the post season. He demands hard work from his players day in and day out, no exceptions.

“Everybody’s been accountable and responsible,” said Hookfin.  “Working, working hard doing what their coaches ask of them. Everybody’s working hard to be perfect throughout the day and just give us maximum effort with great attitudes.”

Hookfin said his team looks real good right now and their right where he wants them, but they have to take it to the next level, in order to get next level results.

“Everybody gets a regular season,” said Hookfin.  “It’s the special teams that make it to the playoffs. But it’s those teams that are even that more special that advance in the playoffs. We understand the landscape of West Tennessee football, being that we’ve been around for a while. But as far as what it takes athletically, mentally. I think we have it, we just have to make sure that we demonstrate those things, assets every time we’re together.”

The Tomcats have the first week of the season off before taking on Marion, a team from Illinois.
