Voices and Voters exhibit debuts in Humboldt

HUMBOLDT, Tenn. – The City of Humboldt gathered Tuesday evening to celebrate an exhibit with an important message.

The Voices and Votes exhibit is a huge opportunity for residents of Humboldt and surrounding counties to learn the history and importance of voting.

The Tom and O.E. Stigall Ethnic Library and Museum has a new exhibit located in the Old Stigall gym.

This development will be in the gym for a short time, but organizers and city officials are grateful for it.

“So with the information that we are giving might encourage more people to start voting and those who have may have fallen by the wayside to start back voting and make their voices heard,” said Johnnie Cyrus, the Assistant Chairman for the Tom & O.E. Stigall Ethnic Library &  History Museum.

One local law official shared why his position wouldn’t be possible without those who did vote for him.

“It’s so important and so large. We’re having it in this historical gymnasium and it just gives the people the opportunity to come out and take a look about what elections are, what it means to vote. Go vote. Go register to vote,” said Humboldt Mayor Marvin Sike.

This exhibit is a partnership with the Smithsonian Institution. Visitors will be able to learn from five different galleries.

Each gallery tells a different part of history in voting from early America to modern day America with interactive kiosks.

“From the early beginnings to all the way down through the challenges that different populations in the society have had to go through to gain the vote, to keep the vote, and that’s one of our main objectives to participate in the process,” said Cyrus.

Voices and Votes will only be on exhibit until January 4 in the Old Stigall gym.

Visitors are welcomed to visit this art exhibit on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
