Gen Z students interest in STEM jobs rising
STEM education has been talked about and implemented in classrooms for years, and it is paying off as the interest in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math are growing.
New research shows that 75 percent of Gen Z students are interested in jobs involving STEM, but only 30 percent of those students are planning to pursue a career in those fields, according to Dan Correa, the CEO of the Federation of American Scientists.
So one of the focuses to bridge the gap is the intentional exposure to STEM occupations, like coding, and getting hands-on experiences in the classrooms and even in after school programs or clubs.
There is not a certain age to start developing these vital skills, as the interest may appear in something as simple as playing with Legos and transform into a full career depending on how that interest is nourished.
“We should be thinking about igniting their interests because all this research suggests that is what is the driver. Feeling like they’re good at this and like this is these are activities, that they have some agency around it that they’re actually having fun and passionate about, about doing and pursuing,” Correa said.
