Update: School bus driver cited after Highway 70 crash

UPDATE — The driver of a Jackson-Madison County school bus has been cited by law enforcement after a Wednesday afternoon crash, according to a release from the school system.

One of the eight students on the bus at the time was transported by ambulance to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The other seven students were released at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle involved was also transported by ambulance with non-life threatening injures, according to the release.

The bus driver will not be assigned to his duties pending the outcome of an investigation, the release states.

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — A school bus was involved in a wreck Wednesday afternoon along Highway 70 about five miles north of Interstate 40.

The crash occurred near the intersection of Highway 70 and Poplar Lane. Troopers on scene say the bus was crossing the highway from 7 Oaks Drive when it was struck by a car.

Troopers say one student, a boy, was transported but is not believed to be seriously injured.

The driver of the car also was taken to a local hospital. There is not yet word on the extent of their injuries.

The bus was No. 111. Parents on scene say the students were coming from East Elementary, which WBBJ has not yet confirmed.

A blue car with heavy front-end damage was seen loaded onto a wrecker as crews worked to clear the scene.
