Selmer sees history made with first Black woman sworn-in as alderman
SELMER, Tenn. – A local town celebrated history being made Thursday evening.
LaShell Moore is the first Black woman to be elected as an alderman in Selmer. This moment is something that she has been looking forward to.
“Being the first African American woman means a lot not only for me but also for women that will come after me. I am hoping that this will open the door for other women, not only women of color, but for women in general that want to serve in this capacity,” Moore said.
Her slogan read “Better Together” which is what she is striving for as an alderwoman.
One of her goals is to unify the board so that the town can thrive and grow.
“We live in a great town. We do. We have great citizens here in the Town of Selmer. So I definitely want to enhance what we already have. We live in a great community. So I’m just looking forward to helping out in whatever capacity I can,” Moore said.
Moore has been a teacher for 17 years and views this position as another platform to educate others.
She also hopes to use this position to continue servicing members of the community as she has in the past.
Selmer’s Mayor Sherry Inman is also looking forward to Moore’s leadership.
“I’m excited to have a great team player that is going to bring us into 2024, Miss Lashelle Moore, elected by the people so I am excited,” Inman said.
Moore also hopes that she can be an inspiration to young girls who aspire to lead in the future.
