Officer, sheriff’s sergeant charged with buying stolen goods

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Federal prosecutors say a Memphis police officer, a Shelby County sheriff’s sergeant and a nightclub owner have been charged with buying liquor, electronics and shoes that they believed were stolen.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Memphis says Roy Hughes, owner of the Gentlemen’s Club in Memphis, obtained cases of liquor, Apple iPhones, a Samsung Galaxy Tablet, and a Samsung Gear watch from a person working for federal agents.

Prosecutors say Hughes knew the items, worth more than $1,000, were stolen.

Authorities say Shelby County sheriff’s Sgt. Warren Jones and Memphis Officer Torrance Taylor also bought items they believed were stolen. Those items included Samsung tablets, a DeWalt tool kit and shoes.

Court records do not show if the men have lawyers. The law enforcement officers have been relieved of duty.
