Second accused gunman charged in east Jackson apartment shooting

JACKSON, Tenn. — A second suspect has been arrested in connection to the August 21 shooting at Parkridge Apartments in east Jackson.

Jaquel FranklinJaquel Franklin appeared before a judge Friday morning and is charged with attempted first degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.

Police say a man was standing in front of the 1000 building of the Parkridge Apartment complex on Sunday August 21 when he was approached by two men he knew, Jaquel Franklin and Jarvis Hodges. Police say the two men then chased the victim around the apartment complex and that one man, Franklin, had a gun.  When they caught up with the victim, they began punching him with their fists and striking him with the gun, according to police.

Court papers state that Franklin tried to shoot the victim during this time but was unsuccessful due to the weapon malfunctioning. The victim was able to eject the magazine from the gun and temporarily escape but the two men caught up with him again near the 600 building of the complex where police say Franklin shot the victim in the chest. park-ridge-shooting

Witnesses in the 600 building say after they heard the shot, they saw a black man beating the victim and hitting him with a gun. Court papers say that the victim identified the two men as Jaquel Franklin and Jarvis Hodges in a photo lineup.

Franklin’s bond was set at $1 million and the judge ordered him to be held on a probation violation.

Jarvis Hodges appeared in court on August 25 where he was charged with attempted first degree murder and his bond was set at $75,000.
