Jackson School dismissal causes major traffic delays

Thelma Barker Elementary School is one of many schools causing traffic issues for parents, neighbors and commuters.

“Sometimes it gets backed up, you have to wait for quite awhile or you have to show up 30  minutes early to get a good spot. If you show up at 3:30, you won’t leave until at least 4,” parent Tabatha Green said.

Green said some days it takes her 45 minutes to pick up her son but the problem is not just in the afternoons.

“People are dropping their kids off and instead of staying in line they park so the crossing guard is stopping people all the time. So you can get here at 8 and not actually drop your kid off until 8:20,” Green said.

This is causing some kids to be late to school.

It is an issue residents living near the school are fed up with.

“It’s a real big problem out here because it’s bumper-to-bumper and I have two driveways here and they block both of them,” Marcel Northcott said.Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 8.48.58 PM

It is an issue Northcott said did not recently start.

“Well, I’ve been here when it was built. I’ve lived here for all these years and it progressively got worse.”

Others like Salvador Damazo said it is frustrating.

“It’s hard to get out of here. We have to wait at least ten to fifteen minutes to get out of my own driveway.”
