Police identify man shot and killed by officer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – City police in Memphis have identified a man shot and killed by officers during a confrontation late Monday afternoon.
A police statement Tuesday identified the dead man as 33-year-old Johnny Taylor.
Officers were responding to a 911 hang-up call at 5:41 p.m. Monday when a caller to operators said a man was shooting a gun inside his residence. Another call said the man reloaded his gun and was outside, arguing with a neighbor.
Police arrived to find Taylor crouched behind a car. Authorities said that when Taylor was ordered to drop his gun, he stood up and fired several times at officers. One officer returned fire with a 12-gauge shotgun and Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer who returned fire is on routine administrative leave.
