Kayla Nicole Copeland, 28, of Martin and Dewond Estes, 42, of Battle Creek, Mich., were arrested Thursday night, according to a release from the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators obtained a search warrant Thursday for a room at a Martin motel to search for methamphetamine. As they were getting ready to execute the warrant, they saw two people leave the room around 8:30 p.m. and walk to a nearby convenience store.

The pair left the store and got into the back seat of a car in the parking lot. Officers followed the car and pulled it over.

Deputies say Copeland and Estes were in the back seat and had asked the driver for a ride. A deputy who was talking to them saw a plastic zip bag under a child safety seat that appeared to contain meth, according to the release.

The driver gave permission to search the car, and deputies reportedly found nine and a half ounces of meth in the back seat. They say it was placed under a child safety seat with a small child in it at the time of the traffic stop.

The driver was not involved in the possession of the drugs, according to the release.

Deputies say the street value of the meth is around $27,000.

Copeland and Estes both are charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to resale.
