Acting class ‘Senior Scenes’ being offered in north Jackson
JACKSON, Tenn. — One local business has created an activity that senior citizens in the Hub City can participate in.
Northpark Studio of the Arts offers Senior Scenes to senior citizens. This event was created for older people to tap into the younger years.
Acting skills are not required and classes are offered at a discounted price.
“Acting, reading different scripts, and things like that. Developing characters, but we want to make sure it’s kept fun. That’s the whole point behind this is to give seniors, including myself, a fun thing to do in the middle of the day on a Thursday,” said Deborah Simer, the owner of Northpark Studio of the Arts.
Senior Scenes has a few health benefits such as memorization, socialization, and avoiding depression.
“Seniors are quickly being marginalized, and we can do something about that. And this is one of the ways that it can be done,” said Keith Davis, a co-teacher of Senior Scenes.
This class was inspired by Davis’s friend who was a part of Actors Equity Home.
“So he is now in that home there that’s full of seniors, and they get together and actually do shows or skits in the home. And it keeps them lively, active, and it keeps the memory as well,” Davis said.
As of now, there is talk of the class reading Alice in Wonderland and Aesop’s Fables.
“I believe each class will have some new things involved, but then we will take some things that we spent a little time on or a little more time developing a story or a character,” Simer said.
Classes are at the Northpark Studio of the Arts on Thursdays starting at 11 a.m.
Northpark Studio is located at 2189-B North Highland Avenue in north Jackson. You can call (731) 300-7477.
