City to kickoff celebration of Black History Month on Feb. 2
JACKSON, Tenn. – The City of Jackson celebrates Black History with an array of special events and displays at City Hall in February.
The celebration kicks off Friday with a proclamation from Mayor Scott Conger as well as an opening ceremony by Keith Davis and a musical performance with Valerie Porter and Drum Circle.
The celebration continues all month long with events each week ranging from poetry readings to dance performances.
- Friday, February 2: Opening Ceremony/Reading of the Proclamation by Mayor Scott Conger/ Keith Davis/Valerie Porter Drum Circle
- Friday, February 9: Poetry Reading by the Griot Collective/Music by Lonita Dickerson
- Friday, February 16: Performance by Valarie Spragins Dance Studio directed by Veronica Sesson/Ebony Taylor
- Friday, February 23: Original Poetry and Music by Ontoni Reedy/Lane College Choir
“People within the Jackson community that are speaking towards the culture and doing expressions of art within the culture. We’re very excited about the different performers and presenters we have this year. And we invited the community to come and take part,” said Christiana Gallagher, the Community Relations Director.
