2024 Black History Month: Don McCorry
It’s time to spotlight one of our neighbors, presented to you by the Tennessee Lottery.
Each week in February, WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News will celebrate Black History Month by introducing you to a member of our community here in West Tennessee.
This week’s spotlight is no stranger to the community. He is a native Jacksonian.
Don McCorry grew up in the Hub City, graduated high school here, attended a year at Lane College, and continued his education in Nashville, graduating from Tennessee State University.
Later on, McCorry traveled outside of Tennessee, spending years experiencing other places, such as Washington D.C.
Ten years later he returned to his first home.
“Came back to Jackson and life kind of unfolded for me. I always say when you surround yourself with the right people, good things happen,” McCorry said.
One of those “good things” includes his involvement with the Jackson-Madison County African American Chamber of Commerce.
“It is one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had,” he said. “Find a problem, find something that you love, and marry those two together. You’ll never have to work a day in your life.”
It is this kind of passion that fuels McCorry to help the next generation, along with so many people in our community.
“I love my kids. In the summer we got two summer programs. Thanks to a grant that we got from Toyota. We have a STEM program in the summer. And we also have a Follow Me Into Business program, which teaches young people the concept of being entrepreneurs, how to go out and create a job based on a passion that you have,” McCorry said.
McCorry also shared that many people inspired and poured into him from a kid even until now.
He wanted to share that the JMCAACC is open to anyone, and multiple events are happening throughout the year, including the Jewel Awards on February 17.
Tickets are still available.
