TBI releases suspect ID, continues investigation into officer-involved shooting

JACKSON, Tenn. — A shooting early Sunday morning leaves one dead and several injured.

On February 11, at approximately 3 a.m., officers with the Jackson Police Department were patrolling the area of 23 Heritage Square, formerly known as Slide and Ride 2, when officers heard shots being fired inside the building.

According to JPD’s statement, responding to the shooting in progress, an armed individual was shot at the entrance by a JPD officer and died due to his injuries.

The involved officer will be placed on administrative leave during the TBI’s investigation process pursuant to JPD’s policy.

Jackson Police also stated three patrons from inside the building suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to a local hospital by emergency medical services.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene.

According to a statement released on TBI’s website, multiple people were seen running out of the building at the time of the incident.

The armed individual at the entrance, whose name TBI revealed as Erik Aguilera, had a gun in his hand and was being pursued by a security guard.

One of the officers fired at Aguilera, striking and killing him.

No officers were injured during the incident.

TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews.

The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit.

This investigation is still active and ongoing.
