Committee Does Not Vote, Madison Co. Landfill Remains Open

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn.–More uncertainty for people in Madison County upset about a landfill in their neighborhood. The Madison County Solid Waste Planning Region Board met Tuesday, but did not take action. A sign staked on Ronald Nelson‘s front lawn lets people know how he feels. “We don’t need this out here,” he said. “It’s like we don’t exist.” A landfill on Betty Manley Road runs adjacent to his property. He hears trucks constantly and finds trash on the road. Nelson says the landfill decreases property values and could contaminate the water. “We call and complain, but we never get no response back from anyone,” he said. Last month a Davidson County judge ruled the landfill did not properly obtain a permit to operate. “We won at the trial court level, so we’re pleased with the ruling, so we’ll be pleased to let it stand,” said Madison County Attorney Steve Maroney. Tuesday the county‘s solid waste board discussed the court‘s decision. Members did not take any action. “We only weigh in on the solid waste plan that’s put in place,” he said. The landfill has until July 19 to appeal the court‘s decision. Nelson just wants it shut down. “The reason why I moved here, to get away from the hassle and bustle of the city,” he said. WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News contacted the landfill Tuesday to try and get their side of the story. Workers declined to comment.
