What’s on the ballot: Information on upcoming local elections

JACKSON, Tenn. — With community members taking heed to early voting, we wanted to inform you of some of your options on the ballot.

We spoke to Henderson County Administrator of Elections, Robin Powers, who stated that he wants to see participants voting.

“It’s important for people to get out and vote so their voices can be heard, and elect the people that they think are the best fit in office,” Powers said.

He even stated that there is a way to prepare yourselves before you come to vote.

“A sample ballot for the newspaper, our Facebook page and our website if they want to review the ballot before they come in to vote,” said Powers.

The sample ballot includes positions such as School Districts 1, 3, 5 and 7, as well as Assessor of Property.

Powers also gave the hours of operation that community members may come vote.

“Voting hours here in Henderson County are Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9-4, Tuesday, Thursday, 9-6 and 9-12 on Saturdays,” Powers stated.

Administrator of Elections in Hardin County, Kim Melson, also spoke with us.

She stated that an absentee ballot is available for those who can’t come in physically to vote.

“They’d have to request an application and they have certain prerequisites for that, and we would mail them a ballot and they would mail it back,” Melson said. “It has to be postmarked by the post office to come back to our office to count.”

Melson also listed some of the categories to vote on.

“We have delegates — Republican delegates — there weren’t any Democratic delegates,” said Melson. “We have the Assessor of Property. It’s running on the county Republican primary.”

She even mentioned the Road Board.

“We have Districts 1 and 2 for the Road Board. There weren’t any candidates on the Republican primary for that,” Melson said.

School board districts were also included.

“We have School Board Districts 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9, and only one district which is District 7 has a candidate running on the county Republican primary,” said Melson.

Early voting will continue until the February 27, with Election Day set for March 5.

This election cycle, voters will also be selecting their choice for the Republican Presidential candidate ahead of the Presidential Election in November.

To view sample ballots and voting information for the upcoming election in March, visit your local county’s Election Commission website or call their office for more information.
