JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jackson Awards highlight members of the community that help make this city a special place. A 2012 recipient, Kathi Landon Leatherwood is thankful to be recognized for her work in the arts. Leatherwood believes the arts define a community’s identity and said the city of Jackson is rich in the arts. “The fact they love the arts so much, there’s so many different layers for Jackson and different interests and I think people feel free to express themselves.” Leatherwood worked at the Jackson Arts Council as the executive director for 12 years. Her work there is what earned her the nomination and recipient. “Some of the past recipients have been artists, performers, presenters, some of them have been supporters of the arts, my role was supporting the arts,” she explained. Leatherwood jokes that the person who nominated her was just being extremely generous for giving her credit on the arts in Jackson. Her strong personality as a leader in the community is what made a difference in Jackson. “I think it was good timing because there’s a lot going on in the arts now so I was fortunate to be nominated,” she said. This award was truly an honor for Leatherwood and she is proud of the arts in Jackson. “I’ll always appreciate the fact that I was honored with the award that is something very special to me and I do appreciate that.”
