MARTIN, Tenn- More than 300 patients were seen in the first hour alone, after the National Guard opened the clinic doors at Martin Middle School; and it was just the beginning for the 11-day project to help those, they said, need it the most. “It’s God-sent,” said Tina Bombe, who received medical attention. “If this weren’t here, I don’t know what I would do.” More than 200 military medical professionals volunteered their time to provide free medical, vision, and dental screenings for West Tennesseans. Organizers said they are expecting to see close to a thousand people each day, and the program is a dual benefit for both residents and military professionals. It was all a part of the military’s Innovate Readiness Training, where medical professionals are able to give patients free screenings at temporary clinics around the country. “We’re able to go into an area, get our training, and also provide a service to an under-served population,” said Major Michael Hicks. Although some sat for hours, patiently waiting for their turn, they said it was worth the time because it could be their only chance to receive medical care. The screenings are being held from July 9 to17, from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.
