Jackson State President leads ‘Heart Walk’ on campus
JACKSON, Tenn. — One local college is focusing on the importance of having a healthy heart during this month.
Jackson State Community College held their President’s Heart Health Walk Monday morning, where students, faculty and staff walked to honor American Heart Month.
This walk is only 30 minutes long and spans across a half mile on campus.
“This month we just wanted to get out on campus, we’re doing a thirty minute walk, about a mile and a half, to have an opportunity for us to get up get active,” said JSCC President Carol Rothstein.
Rothstein added that this is an opportunity to network with members of the school they usually don’t see.
She also says that majority of people on campus spend most of their time sitting down. and this is a great opportunity to move.
“It is a month long celebration, but I encourage everyone to continue it throughout the year whenever you have the opportunity to get up and take a walk at lunch time, I encourage everyone to do that,” Rothstein said.
Some professors have even encouraged their students to join them on the walk.
“Those little things — it’s not only learning Spanish, it’s trying to do little things that improves your life and makes you learn faster and better,” said Marisol Hernandez-Soto, JSCC Spanish Assistant Professor.
Hernandez-Soto makes it a priority to keep her students active during her course time, such as dancing, walking and and other fun activities.
“So I know language is pretty hard for them, and its kinda hard to be like an hour and fifteen minutes just sitting there in a lecture, just listening to me, so they have a lot of exercises that they have to go to the board,” Hernandez-Soto said.
This has been an ongoing walk for the college, and frequent walkers are excited about the next heart focus walk.
