Family pet dies in fire destroying Milan home
MILAN, Tenn. — We were informed by a WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News tipster around 10 p.m. Sunday of a fire that took place in Milan on Pierce Street.
We spoke to Milan Fire Department’s public information officer, John Williams, who stated that the department received a call around 6:34 p.m. to a structured fire located on 3064 Pierce Street.
“The initial arriving engine, they arrived to heavy smoke and fire visible from the home,” Williams stated.
Williams stated that the department was able to handle the situation quickly.
“A shift responded to the fire. They made a quick knock down. They had the fire out within thirty minutes.”
He did state that the residents of the home lost a furry friend.
“Unfortunately a pet did perish inside the home, but there were no injuries or fatalities to the any firefighters or persons in the home,” said Williams.
The department had no outside help to contain the fire.
“We didn’t get any outside assistance for this structured fire. The fire crew was there. Captain Gallamore and they were able to get inside of there, and they had the fire knocked down within thirty minutes.”
He wanted to offer advice to the community of Milan.
“If you don’t have smoke alarms and you live in Milan, feel free to call (731) 686-3996,” Williams said. “That is the Milan Fire Department. We have those free in the Get Alarm Tennessee program. The residents of this home, they advised that they were in the bed and it was the smoke alarm that woke them up.”
He wants everyone to be prepared in case this occurs to them.
“I would encourage everyone to get smoke alarms. Smoke alarms save lives,” Williams said.
The cause of the fire is unknown and is still being investigated.
