AgResearch Center helps celebrate a decade of green for TN Tree Day

JACKSON, Tenn. — This weekend an annual tree planting event is taking place, and residents are taking part across the state.

Saturday is Tennessee Tree Day.

Nearly 100-thousand trees will be planted across the state.

This is the 10th annual tree-planting day created by the Tennessee Environmental Council with efforts to improve the environment and enhance life among communities.

“It is great for the planet and trees give us beauty as well as helping with the climate,” said Jamie Boone, Vice President of Programs for the Madison County Master Gardeners.

More than 10-thousand trees were delivered to the UT AgResearch Center in Jackson for residents in surrounding counties to pick up.

“We here in Madison County, Master Gardeners, we are sort of the hub for 17 counties,” said Boone.

Volunteers of Master Gardeners sorted, labeled and prepared bundles for those who reserved trees to plant at their homes and on their farms.

“These are what we call bare root trees, just the bare roots. They are easy to plant. So we’ve had people sign up to get anywhere from 2 trees to 100 trees,” said Boone.

This has been a unique year because there were over 13 varieties to pick from.

“Some of the other trees we have are Gray dogwoods, Plum trees and Willow oak,” said Boone.

Master Gardeners say trees are an essential plant to have in any landscape.

“You have your trees that provide shade for your house, picnic under and play under. Trees are really your cornerstone in your property and then you go from there to your shrubs and your flowers,” said Boone.

Madison County residents can pick up their trees at the center today and Saturday.

The Master Gardeners will have their annual plant sale at the AgResearch Center May 3rd and 4th from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
