900K settlement reached for woman shot by sheriff’s deputy
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) – Bradley County will pay nearly $1 million to the family of a woman who was shot to death by a deputy.
The Chattanooga Times Free-Press reports (http://bit.ly/2eyyk46) former Bradley County sheriff’s deputy Dustin Patrick hasn’t admitted wrongdoing in the 2011 incident that left 30-year-old Armetta Foster dead. However, his attorneys have agreed to pay $900,000 to Foster’s family in a civil rights lawsuit filed in 2012. The money will come from Bradley County, which insured Patrick at the time.
The incident began with a welfare check as Foster was walking in the median of I-75 with her two children. Patrick has said Foster came at him with a knife, but her children say Foster jumped on Patrick’s back.
An attorney for Bradley County declined to comment after the announcement Wednesday.
