Cicada swarms forecasted to arrive in late spring

JACKSON, Tenn. — Some noise-making bugs, nicknamed the ‘front yard nuisance’, are coming back.

Two large broods of cicadas are expected to come out at the same time this spring.

Dr. Chris Simon, Senior Research Scientist at the University of Connecticut, stated to us that the cicadas are completely harmless.

These bugs will remain out for about four weeks.

“Usually in any one area, you just have one group of cicadas but sometimes they come out four years early and sometimes four years late. So because of that, you could have emergence close together, or four years apart. But you won’t have two broods coming out together in the same area,” said Dr. Simon, Senior Research Scientist at the University of Connecticut.

Dr. Simon says that you could possibly start seeing cicadas around mid to late May.
