Shiloh National Park hosts Cavalry demo

SHILOH, Tenn.—Visitors were able to catch a glimpse of what it was like for a Cavalry soldier during the Civil War.

Shiloh National Military Park hosted Cavalry demonstrations today. The event took place at noon in Duncan Field at Shiloh.

The Cavalry demonstrations offer an inside look at weaponry and various tactics used on the battlefield by the cavalry during the Civil War.

Formations by the units were on display and soldiers were dressed in period appropriate uniforms.

The living history event featured the company performing a saber drill and included reenactors displaying the different ways the edged weapon was during battle.

The Cavalry demos were presented as part of the park’s commemoration of the 162nd Anniversary of the Battle of Shiloh.

“Cavalry members were required to take care of their own horses. Of course, in the U.S. Cavalry they were issued horses, supplied everything to the troopers,” said one reenactor.

This the first year Shiloh National Park has hosted the event since 2018.
