IRS introduces free e-filing in 12 States, simplifying tax season

JACKSON, Tenn. — Taxpayers in 12 states, including Tennessee, can now e-file returns directly with the IRS for free.

Americans can be a nation of procrastinators, our tax returns prove it.

An estimated one-third of Americans wait until the last-minute to do their taxes according to a recent study by IPX.

Most procrastinate because they don’t think they’ll get a refund and 25-percent state the process is too complicated and stressful.

But a new program from the IRS is helping.

This year, the IRS launched ‘Direct File’ in 12 states, allowing taxpayers in those states to file their tax returns for free directly through the IRS.

This is a historic milestone, moving the US closer to a world where all taxpayers can file their taxes easily and for free.

“If you want to use a local tax preparer or commercial tax prep software, you still can but if you want to be able to file your taxes for free from your phone or your computer, usually in less than an hour, this year for the first time, you can use IRS direct file,” said Adam Ruben, Vice President at Economic Security Project.

Every year, U.S. taxpayers, on average, spend 150 dollars and nine hours of their time filing taxes.

April 15th is, by far, the biggest tax filing day of the year.
