Super Bowl champion partners with SWHRA, promotes meal programs

JACKSON, Tenn. — A Tennessee native and two-time Super Bowl Champion, partners with a local agency to kick off the ‘Summer Nutrition Programs’ for kids in West Tennessee.

Southwest Human Resource Agency member, and Kansas City Chiefs Player, Trey Smith, traveled to eight counties today in West Tennessee to provide information on, and promote, SWHRA’s Summer Nutrition Programs.

These programs provide free meals from May through August to children 18 and under.

“For us, it’s just a mission of mercy to try to feed children. I can’t imagine a child being hungry,” said Executive Director for SWHRA, Mike Smith.

We asked Trey how it feels to be back home and how this partnership has encouraged him to give back to the community.

“1 in every 4 kids go hungry when school is let out in the summer. I think we can do a lot better. I think that’s unacceptable. I think about myself at that age, I used to love to eat. Just, anything I can do to champion a cause and help out with that to bring some more awareness to the great work that they’re already doing. I want to be a part of that, and it’s always so great to be back in West Tennessee,” said Trey.

This is one of many programs that help feed children in 8 counties throughout West Tennessee.

Trey was clearly a great choice as an ambassador for the program.

This opportunity enabled him to interact with fans while promoting the program.

The agency is proud to have him now be a member of the SWHRA team.

“This is such an awesome event for Trey to spend the time to come out here and do this, being from the area. I don’t know all he’s done here but I know it’s huge. What an awesome guy. We’re just excited for him to come and represent us,” said Food Services Solutions Director, Tony Terez.

The agency encourages those with a site where children gather in the summer to enroll now.

Their central kitchen in Henderson will prepare and deliver the meals directly to the site for the children.
