Police pursuit ends with suspect dying in custody
HENRY COUNTY, Tenn. — A police pursuit in Henry County ends with a suspect dying after being taken into custody.
According to Henry County Sheriff Josh Frey, on the morning of April 20, they received multiple calls about a driver who was driving recklessly and who was possibly intoxicated.
Deputies located the vehicle around 11:30 a.m. on Highway 79.
The vehicle was seen driving through the grass median.
At this point deputies attempted to get the driver, Daniel Russell, to stop the vehicle.
According to investigators, Russell took deputies on a chase that involved driving into oncoming traffic.
Russell’s car finally came to a halt on Highway 79 North.
A Henry County Sheriff’s Department deputy pulled his patrol unit in front of Russell’s car to try and keep him there.
Russell then accelerated forward, striking the patrol unit in the side.
With his vehicle now disabled, the Henry County Sheriff’s Department could coerce Russell out of his vehicle.
Sheriff Frey says once Russell was out of his vehicle he began resisting arrest.
Deputies used less lethal methods to attempt to bring Russell under control, and after an initial struggle, Russell was placed under arrest.
During the arrest Russell became unresponsive, so Henry County Sheriff’s deputies began administering lifesaving measures, one of those being Narcan.
EMS was also on scene and began furthering those lifesaving measures and transported him to the Henry County Medical Center.
Upon arrival he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation is now being handled by the TBI and there is no official cause of death available at this time.
