Local Sheriff receives Champion of Victims’ Rights award
JACKSON, Tenn. — A local sheriff was awarded a special recognition.
Today, April 26, Madison County Sheriff Julian Wiser was given a Champion of Victims’ Rights award.
It was presented by the State Director of Marsy’s Law for Tennessee, Bonnie Brezina.
Brezina says Sheriff Wiser has been a major leader and supporter Marsy’s Law, a proposed constitutional amendment for enforceable rights for crime victims.
She says the last piece of legislation like this was in 1998, and if passed, Tennessee will be the 13th state to enact Marsy’s Law.
We haven’t had legislation like this in over 25 years in Tennessee. So, if not now then when and I think its pass time to support and to toughen up and give it some teeth for crime victims and their families,” said Brezina.
Brezina says Marsy’s Law has initially been passed in both the house and senate.
It will go back to the house next January and has to pass by two-thirds majority.
From there, it will go back to the senate in 2026.
If passed, it will be presented for Tennesseans to vote on.
