St. Nicholas Orthodox Church celebrates Palm Sunday

JACKSON, Tenn.—A local church honors Palm Sunday with a special service.

This morning, St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, located at 419 Old Humboldt Road in Jackson, welcomed guests to join them in honoring Palm Sunday.

A liturgy was held at the church which included the congregation taking part in a procession around the church holding blessed leaves of palms, some holding decorated candles, and singing.

Following the procession and service, the church members gathered to share a meal which included fried catfish and French fries. Members of the church also prepared side items and tasty desserts to share.

St. Nicholas began celebrating Holy Week with Lazarus Saturday and services will continue throughout this week.

“Today, we celebrate his entrance into Jerusalem and this whole next week we’ll be celebrating what we and the Orthodox church call Holy Week,” said Hannah Snowden, Member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church.

The final day of Holy Week will take place on Sunday, May 5, with their celebration of Pascha or Easter.
