JMCSS holds 3rd annual gala celebration
JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson-Madison County School System held its 3rd annual gala tonight, May 2.
Melissa Spurgeon, Chief of Staff for the JMCSS talked about the excitement for the event.
“The purpose of this is for the business community and the colleges and organizations in the community,” said Spurgeon.
The North Side High School Jazz Band and two Community Montessori students were recognized for their talents.
“It’s just a great time. It’s a great time to be proud of our school system and it’s just a fun night to get to dress up and celebrate it and spread the word with the companies,” said Spurgeon.
Spurgeon told us that school leaders are proud of the progress in the school system.
“We’ve had a lot of athletic successes the last year and successes in the arts and talk about those ongoing challenges because we don’t want to act like that we don’t have challenges.
Entertainment was also provided by Kelsea Merriweather, a South Side High School alumnus.
Then, it was time for Superintendent Dr. Marlon King to make his State of Schools Address.
“I could talk about our new partnerships with West Tennessee Healthcare and JEA. These new partnerships have given our students the opportunity to work in the workforce,” said Dr. King.
Dr. King spoke on the physical strength of the school district and its successes.
He also told us how the money raised from the gala will be utilized.
“The money and proceeds go into a special projects fund that is at the Community Foundation so none of the school system funds are used to put this gala on,” said Dr. King.
Dr. King also stated in his address that 10 million dollars would be pulled from the fund balance to do other projects.
