Spring Plant Sale in full bloom

JACKSON, Tenn. — The annual Spring Plant Sale officially kicked off Friday morning at the West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center. By the time we arrived early, there were already people lined up. Hundreds of people — with the parking lots full.

Celeste Scott, the Western Region Horticulture Extension Specialist, tells us a little bit more about this event.

“So we have two plant sales happening right now,” Scott explained. “We’ve got the plant selections from the Madison County Master Gardeners that are inside the building. And we have UT Garden’s plant selections, that plant sale is happening outside. So we’ve joined forces. It’s a wonderful partnership.”

If you find your way to the sale and you have any questions at all, you are going to want to find someone in an orange or yellow vest. There are tons of them willing to help you out. Scott tells us who they are and what they are doing out here.

“Everybody who has an orange or yellow vest on is a Madison County Master Gardener. This is just letting folks know who they can come to for questions,” she said. “That is really, for me, one of the most fun parts about today. Yes, we’re getting to buy plants. Yes, we’re able to make money to support horticulture programs in the area. But, we’re getting to share knowledge right now.”

There were many people shopping around for plants. We talked to one man, who stopped by with his wife, who says they come here every year and this year is the busiest he has ever seen it.

Scott tells us about the enthusiasm people have when it comes to their plants here in West Tennessee.

“I had some folks tell me this morning that they look forward to these two days of the year,” said Scott. “They live here in Jackson and these are the two most anticipated days that they look forward to every year.”

If you did not get to come out on Friday, you still have time Saturday. You just might want to arrive a little before 9 a.m., because it will likely be very busy.

The sale on Saturday will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 1 p.m.

There are over 500 varieties of plants at this sale.
