UT to start $4m graduate fellowship program in Knoxville
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The University of Tennessee is starting a $4 million fellowship program to recruit exceptional graduate students.
Starting fall 2017 at the flagship campus in Knoxville, the university will offer four-year $10,000 annual fellowships for up to 100 graduate students.
The students will receive the $40,000 in addition to their college-funded graduate research assistant or graduate teaching assistant stipends.
The school says the program, named the Tennessee Fellowship for Graduate Excellence, aims to attract the best and brightest students worldwide.
The new initiative will phase out the top-off program, which is providing $4 million to graduate students campus-wide this year.
Dixie Thompson, dean of the Graduate School, says the old program spread the money out too thin and diluted its impact.
