Students present ideas for change to community leaders

JACKSON, Tenn. — A leadership development program gives high school students an opportunity to to present ideas for change to leaders in the community.

Jackson Grown Leader Fellowship hosts the 3rd annual ‘Challenge To the City’ on Friday, May 3.

The event is held at theCO, highlighting eight high school students who are passionate for change in their community.

Students stood before local leaders to speak about a variety of concerns they have involving homelessness, awareness for mental health and the impact gifted programs have on students’ social development.

“We want a response from the leaders of Jackson, Tennessee to help be the solution for this issue. It’s a big issue so we need everyone on board,” said Mark Owens, Junior at JCMECH and student at JSCC.

Each student participates in the program for one to two years and receives mentorship from JMCSS alumni.

“They bring me in to talk with the students about the presentation and public speaking side of what they are going to be doing. So we do some mentorship days on being yourself on stage, being comfortable to present what you want to present. Take your time and let the best part of you shine through as you are presenting,” said Lolo, Jackson Grown Mentor.

The program centers on the core ideas to invest forward and the opportunity to reinvest back

By building on those ideas, students are able to understand their community, launch new ideas and make new connections.
