Fuel leak causes temporary railroad crossing closure

BELLS, Tenn.—A fuel leak temporarily closes a railroad crossing in a local county.

According to the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department, a train engine’s main diesel fuel tank has been punctured and is now leaking diesel.

We spoke to Crockett County Sheriff’s Department public information officer, Stephen Sutton who told us the fuel tank was punctured by debris on the track.

In a social media post on Facebook, the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department stated that it’s estimated 500 gallons of fuel has been spilled.

A hazmat team was dispatched to begin damming and diking the area.

Sutton told us they have already checked the wellhead protection area and there’s no threat to drinking water.

CSX is in charge of cleanup and ground restoration to the area.

The sheriff’s office is asking citizens to avoid the area to ensure all appropriate equipment can get to the scene.

The crossing in downtown Bells was temporarily blocked during clean up efforts.

As of 3:37 pm Sunday afternoon the crossing was reopened.
