Local students recognized at “Do the Write Thing” ceremony

JACKSON, Tenn.—One organization recognizes a special group of local students.

The “Do the Write Thing” Recognition & Awards Breakfast was held this morning.

It took place from 9 until 11 this morning at the DoubleTree Hotel in Jackson.

The event featured a breakfast meal, a message from former Globetrotter and entrepreneur, A.J. Merriweather, and an awards ceremony.

“Do the Write Thing” encourages middle school students to evaluate the impact of violence in their lives through discussions or written works. The program seeks to empower students to take a stand against violence throughout the local community.

Awards were given out at the ceremony to honor both local and national ambassadors of the program.

Of those 20 ambassadors, two were chosen to take their written works to Washington D.C., where they will represent the state of Tennessee.

“We want parents and students to take away that there are many causes for youth violence, but there are more solutions for youth violence. We want to take these ideas and demonstrate those ideas in our communities and schools,” said Annette Graves, chair “Do the Right Thing.”

“Do the Write Thing” was started in Jackson by Attorney Ernest Brooks II in 2008.
