Local church hosts annual father & son breakfast

EAST JACKSON, Tenn.– Below-freezing temperatures did not stop members of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church from coming out to celebrate their annual father and son breakfast Saturday.

unnamed-1“Today is the father and son breakfast, and I’m having a real good time because all these fathers and sons are coming out here to spend time together,” Keith Guy, 10, a member of the church said.

At least 50 people spent their morning in the festively-decorated church dining room to enjoy the breakfast.

Members of the church spent the morning preparing scrambled eggs, bacon and other home-baked goods to share.

But organizers say the annual breakfast is about more than just the food.breakfast-pic

“That’s really the theme here, to bring our community together, support our young people and get behind them to make sure they do well in life,” state representative Jimmy Eldridge said.

Eldridge  says church members opened the breakfast to other people in the community, and seeing the children having a great time makes all the planning that went into the event worthwhile.

“I mean you can look around and see the smile on their face you know this is the season but it is the season but it is the season of fellowship and joy and these young people are having a great time,” he said.

Several members of the church made inspirational speeches throughout the morning.

Jackson mayor Jerry Gist says he is pleased with what the church is doing in the community, and was happy to be a part of the breakfast.

“They do a great job here at the congregation and my comment was that we need about 8 million more men like these who will be a real father to their son,” he said.

Organizers say the number of people who came to the annual event was record breaking for them.

They hope even more fathers and sons will come out to spend quality time together next year.
