JMCSS Recess Bus takes the fun to schools in Madison County
JACKSON, Tenn. — A unique bus makes a stop at one local school to take field day activities to the next level.
Thursday, May 16, brought beautiful weather for field day at Community Montessori School in Jackson.
“I just honestly am really excited. My favorite thing about this is going on the bouncy castles. I love the bouncy castles,” said Ellie Brown, 2nd grader.
“I can’t wait to go down the slide. I didn’t do that last year because I was so scared,” said Brown.
A big hit is the gigantic bouncy houses, but this year something new rolled in.
“We have cornhole. We have hula hoops. We have a gaga pit. We have spike ball. We have 9 square in the air, which is a game the kids absolutely love. So many things that kids can have fun with and the teachers can just watch them. We know that active kids make better learners. We need the kids out and active,” said Annette Wilson, JMCSS Coordinated Health Director.
All of these fun games and activities came on one of only two physical activity buses in the state, the rolling recess bus!
Jackson Madison County School System now has it’s very own.
“We are just elated about having this bus,” said Wilson.
The bus was a collaborative effort made possible by the JMCSS Coordinated School Health team, transportation and maintenance department, and several other departments who helped purchase the equipment.
The school health team says the bus is a way to share resources with P.E. teachers and can be brought directly to your school.
“A lot of the things on our bus we can’t afford to buy for each individual school,” said Wilson.
Wilson says kids need to be up and moving and have time to give the brain a break.
The goal is for students to create habits that last a lifetime because with an active body, comes an active mind.
Soon, any school in the Jackson-Madison County School district can register online to reserve the recess bus for next year.
