20-year-old woman narrowly escapes gunfire on date gone wrong

UPDATE (5/20/24): The suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Gerial McCall. According to booking information received from the Madison County jail, McCall was arrested for aggravated domestic assault, vandalism, and unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon.

JACKSON, Tenn. — One young woman in Jackson tells her story of how she was almost shot by a man she met online.

“I just wanted a way to get away from my ex and that was the way. We just hung out, got some drinks and that was that. That’s how we met,” said Tyniea, victim.

20-year-old Tyniea said that her and the suspect met online last May, but their first time meeting face to face was this past Wednesday, May 15th.

She says that while the pair were hanging out, she felt uneasy with the fact that he kept putting his hand on his gun case attached to his hip.

“That’s what scared me for my life, but you have to understand that alcohol was involved so my demeanor is not going to be the same as if I was sober,” said Tyniea, victim.

That’s when she started continuously yelling for the suspect to leave her house.

She said he just stood there for a while, but eventually their argument went from the bedroom to the front door.

“He leaves out the door eventually, and then as soon as the door almost closes, he turns around and just starts firing shots. I just dodged all the bullets, but as you can see in my home, you’ll see bullets aiming towards me. That’s the way that I was moving. The way they were aimed at,” said Tyniea.

She says the suspect seemed to be in shock after he fired the shots.

He ran from her home, but not without dropping his gun case.

Tyniea says that she called her mother first, but when she didn’t answer, she called the police.

“He really needs attempted murder and solicitation of a minor. He needs all of those charges. The police didn’t even know what type of gun it was. They were asking me and I was like ‘I don’t know, I don’t know anything about guns,'” said Tyniea.

Police did collect pictures and recover bullets from the door at her home.

She stated that they also told her about the Women’s Resource and Rape Assistance Program.

“I’m in a dream. You know to the point where you go through something so bad that your mind kinda blocks it out. And it makes it feel like you’re in a dream. I still haven’t come to my senses fully about this situation yet,” said Tyniea.

The alleged suspect was arrested that night, and still remains in custody.
