Memorial ceremony for fallen officers held in downtown Jackson
JACKSON, Tenn. — An event honors the brave men and women who took an oath to protect and serve, and made the ultimate sacrifice.
Families of fallen officers, local leaders and neighboring law enforcement agencies gathered in downtown Jackson on Friday, May 17th, for a special ceremony.
This ceremony was held to honor the men and women who have lost their lives in law enforcement.
“I certainly want to thank Sheriff Wiser and Chief Corley for putting this together and pulling together all of the law enforcement agencies from this area. We always want to take this time out, especially honoring them during this special week of national observance. I am very proud to be apart of that ,” said Christi Todd, Rep. for TN District 73.
31 fallen heroes were recognized at the ceremony.
The families of those lost were able to place a rose on a memorial wreath to honor their loved ones.
The family of Sergeant Terry Wayne Stowe of Madison County Sheriff’s Office expresses gratitude to those who remember the loving husband and father who they lost three and a half years ago.
“It’s an honor to always hear his name called and that he hasn’t been forgotten. We appreciate all of the acknowledgements that he has gotten. It’s a loving thing. It’s a blessing. It’s a blessing that he is honored even though it’s a sad situation,” said Vanessa Stowe, wife of Sergeant Stowe.
“It’s bittersweet, but it’s very nice,” said Sheletha Smith, daughter of Sergeant Stowe.
The memorial service comes amid National Police Week, a collaborative effort of many organizations, and individuals, dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement.
“I was very honored this year to help pass a law that increases penalties for any kind of assault on our law enforcement officers and we want to continue to do anything we can to protect them while they protect us,” said Todd.
The ceremony concluded with lunch served for all who attended.
According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, 742 officers have died in the line of duty in the state of Tennessee.
