West Tennessee AgResearch Center hosts Cotton Scout School

JACKSON, Tenn. — The West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center hosted the Cotton Scout School today, May 21.

The event was aimed towards West Tennessee growers, crop consultants and agricultural professionals.

Participants learned the latest research regarding cotton development and identification including how to control insects, plant diseases, and weeds.

“Our top points that we want taken away from this are essentially scouting is important with cotton so whether you’re a first time cotton grower or you’ve been growing cotton for four years, scouting cotton is really important. Weeds are really problematic, so are insects and diseases,” said Sebe Brown, Field Crop Research and Extension Entomologist at UT.

Experts explains you can’t focus on weeds and disease, if the cotton isn’t growing in the first place.

So it’s important to focus on row spacing, fixing nutrition deficiencies and having the plant population correct.
