Cemetery hosts honorary ceremony for fallen soldiers, families

WILDERSVILLE, Tenn. — Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of the month of May.

It’s a time for Americans to reflect on the sacrifices many members of the U.S. Military gave to fight and protect the citizens of our country.

A ceremony took place Friday, May 24, at the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at Parkers Crossroads to honor those heroes and their families.

“It’s always a great honor as a citizen to just stop, reflect, and think about the price that’s been paid for the freedom that we all enjoy,” said Ret. Major Gen. Tommy Baker, commissioner for veterans services.

Parkers Crossroads Cemetery is 1 of 5 veterans cemeteries in the state.

This traditional Memorial Day Ceremony is held every year.

Veterans say it is a very moving experience to be able attend this ceremony.

“It’s something we enjoy doing. People appreciate it. It’s a great honor to this country and to the people who are buried out here,” said Bill Tate, a veteran of 7 years with the U.S. Navy, and 22 years with the National Guard.

Any veteran and their spouse who has complete honorable service and has a DD Form 214 can be laid to rest at Parkers Crossroads Cemetery at no cost.

“That service to their country has earned this benefit. We would love to help our families any way we can,” said Eddie Long, cemetery director.

“To all of the families out there, to all of the gold star families; we mourn your loss with you. We know that you live with this sacrifice each and every day, and we will never forget,” said Baker.
