PRESS RELEASE FROM MCKELLAR-SIPES REGIONAL AIRPORT:

The U.S. Department of Transportation Extends Essential Air Service Terms for Jackson, Tennessee

Jackson, TN – June 5, 2024: The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced the extension of the terms of Order 2022-3-18, dated March 28, 2022, until either December 31, 2024, or the inauguration of new service following the conclusion of the pending air carrier selection proceeding for McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport in Jackson, Tennessee.

As part of this extension, Southern Airways Express LLC will continue to provide Essential Air Service (EAS) at Jackson from June 1, 2024, through December 31, 2024. During this period, Southern Airways will receive the annual subsidy rate that it proposed in response to the Department’s Order 2023-11-16, dated November 17, 2023, which requested proposals to serve Jackson for a new term.

The new subsidy rate proposed by Southern Airways is $3,612,250 per year. This rate supports the provision of 11 weekly round trips to Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and 7 weekly round trips to St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). Southern Airways has agreed to continue its service under these terms and at the new subsidy rate.

This extension ensures that McKellar-Sipes will maintain its vital air service connectivity, supporting the West Tennessee community and economy by providing reliable transportation options.

Steve Smith, Executive Director of the Jackson Madison County Airport Authority, expressed his enthusiasm about the announcement: “We are thrilled with the DOT’s decision to extend the Essential Air Service terms for Jackson. This, coupled with the ongoing runway construction and the prospect of a new air service provider, marks an exciting time for our airport and community.”

Cindy Melton, Deputy Director/Airport Manager, echoed these sentiments, stating: “This development is a testament to our commitment to providing top-tier service and infrastructure to our passengers. The improvements underway will significantly enhance our capabilities and service offerings, further connecting Jackson and West Tennessee to major national hubs.”
