Democratic Sen. Lowe Finney Won’t Seek Re-election

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – State Sen. Lowe Finney, who was the last candidate to pick up a seat for Democrats in the state Legislature, says he won’t seek a third term.
The Jackson attorney did not give a reason for his decision in an email to supporters on Wednesday, though Republicans were expected to make a serious challenge for the seat in next year’s election.
Finney in 2006 defeated incumbent Sen. Don McLeary, who had earlier switched parties to become a Republican.
Finney’s win represented the only legislative seat that changed party hands that year.
Democrats have experienced heavy losses in every legislative election since then, and go into next year’s vote with just seven out of 33 Senate seats, and 28 of 99 seats in the House.
