Boy Scouts of America, Knights of Columbus hold flag retirement ceremony

JACKSON, Tenn. — Two local organizations teamed up to hold a special event this evening in the Hub City.

Troop 6 of Boys Scouts of America and Knights of Columbus assembly 1086 hosted a flag retirement ceremony today.

Both organizations celebrated the 247th year of adopting the American flag.

Anyone with a worn down flag was encouraged to bring them in for a respectful retirement.

People were also able to bring un-used flags to the ceremony that were in need of a good home.

They were given out to anyone who needed a new flag.

“After they get dropped or torn up we need to retire them so that there’s something to do with them. It’s our respectful way of doing it,” said Dotson Bouchard, member of Troop 1086.

Bouchard says this isn’t his first ceremonial burn and it’s important to share the purpose of why this ceremony exists.
