UPDATE: House explosion kills two, fire chief confirms

UPDATE(07/16/24): We made contact with the Fire Chief of Obion, Josh Holdeman, in regards to the home explosion.

Holdeman confirmed with us that an explosion did in fact take place and the preliminary investigation points towards a gas leak as the cause.

He also confirmed that both the husband and wife have since died as a result of their injuries.

OBION COUNTY, Tenn. — Sad news out of Obion County after a house allegedly exploded Monday morning.

Details are still limited at this time but after testimony from a neighbor, we have a clearer picture of what happened.

Early Monday morning we were notified by a WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News tipster of a house allegedly exploding in Obion County. After a brief conversation with the Union City Fire Department, who confirmed an incident took place, we were given an address of a residence along Jim Carver Road.

Upon arrival we found the remnants of the house surrounded by police caution tape, ashes of the rubble still smoking hours after the alleged blast.

We spoke to a neighbor who lived down the road about the incident.

While the neighbor chose not to appear on camera, she did tell us the events she says she experienced.

She told us she doesn’t know how the house exploded but in the early morning, her husband was outside their residence when he heard a very loud bang from the residence on Jim Carver Road.

It was after this ‘bang’ that she says the two victims of the explosion, that she said were a husband and wife, arrived at their house with severe burns.

The neighbor said they called 911 and the fire department, along with two air evac helicopters that later arrived.

She says one helicopter took the husband to Regional One in Memphis for treatment and another took the wife to the Baptist Hospital in Union City.

The neighbor tells us, the wife died of her injuries on the way.

We reached out to the Obion County Sheriff’s Office and the Union City Fire Department who were both not currently available for comment or able to confirm the validity of the neighbor’s recollection of the events.

It is important to remember the neighbors testimony of the incident is unconfirmed by official sources at this time.
