Career criminal arrested following major theft in Crockett County
PRESS RELEASE FROM CROCKETT COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT
CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. — On August 12, 2024, at approximately 8:30am, a report was made regarding a major theft from a property in Crockett County.
Our Criminal Investigation Division went to work in partnership with the property owner to determine that Steven Barker, 62 years old, was responsible for the crimes. Our investigators were able to determine that Mr. Barker staked out the property and waited for everyone to leave last evening. Once everyone left the property Mr. Barker pulled onto the property just minutes later to steal thousands of dollars worth of equipment.
Furthermore, it was determined that as Mr. Barker was leaving the residence – he saw a hidden camera. He vandalized the camera and threw it into the water. The camera was recovered from the water and the video evidence was still on the memory card leading to his arrest.
Our investigations were able to determine Mr. Barker has a lengthy criminal history of various property crimes and several hours after receiving the report – our investigators immediately drove to his residence in Dyersburg placing him under arrest. Dyersburg Police Department assisted in the recovery of the stolen items and Mr. Barker now resides at the Crockett County Jail until he can appear before the judge.
Charges include theft over $10,000, vandalism, burglary, tampering with evidence, and other charges may be filed as this is an ongoing investigation.
These positive results come about as a result of the citizens, deputies, and investigators all working together to bring criminals to justice.
The charges and allegations referenced in this release are merely accusations of criminal conduct and not evidence. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted through due process of law.
