Third suspect charged in June 2016 home break-in
JACKSON, Tenn. — After two former high school athletes are charged with theft and burglary in a June 2016 break-in, new developments have emerged in the case. A third suspect has been indicted by a grand jury.
Andrew Goldsmith is charged with aggravated burglary and theft of property. Goldsmith’s attorney, Mark Donahoe, said the charges for Goldsmith came by surprise.
“We were complying with what we had promised to do and we showed up here today with him and he had to go be processed into the system like everybody else,” Donahoe said.
Although Goldsmith was indicted last week, his first court appearance was Monday morning.
“At this point we maintain that Andrew didn’t do anything wrong and he’s not guilty,” Donahoe said. “I mean there were some other people charged long ago who have pleaded guilty to the offense.”
Jacob Morford and William Underwood both pleaded guilty to breaking into a home on Arbor Ridge Cove in June 2016. According to court documents, they took thousands of dollars in cash along with other items. The prosecutor said both men are waiting for sentencing in April.
Donahoe said he doesn’t understand why Goldsmith is now a suspect. “Somewhat of a mystery right now as to what the proof is and what they think they can prove.”
After attempting to get a copy of Goldsmith’s court papers, the request was denied because his documents are “sealed.”
“We’ll have to file our discovery motion with the state and see what evidence is there and go from there, and if it needs to be set for trial, certainly we’re ready to do that and ready to move forward,” Donahoe said.
“The agreed order with the state is a $10,000 bond, and I believe it’s the same bond that’s been indicated to the other defendants,” Circuit Court Judge Roy Morgan said.
Judge Morgan also ordered Goldsmith not to have any contact with Morford and Underwood. Goldsmith’s next court date is set for 8 a.m. May 8.
Goldsmith, a member of the Tennessee Tech football team, was “suspended earlier today [Monday], based on the charges pending against him,” according to Athletic Director Mark Wilson.
