UT Martin prepares for the beginning of fall semester

MARTIN, Tenn.–UT Martin is a day away from the start of classes.

It’s the time of year when the snooze button gets hit less frequently..of course the first day of classes. The University of Tennessee at Martin is gearing up for a successful start of the school year.

“We have just completed our welcome week programs..started on Thursday with move in for most of our freshman students..new freshman and new transfers. It just wrapped up (Sunday)..they are here and we’re sending them off to class and preparing them for what’s to come next so class starts on tomorrow it’s exciting. we’re trying to get them pumped up for what’s to come,” said Chancellor Yancey Freeman of the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Chancellor Freeman expresses his gratitude for the the exponential growth at the university

We are up 7 percent in terms of new freshman students above where we were last year. 3 percent in transfers..our retention rate is up about 3 percent so we’re seeing some wonderful growth on our campus so far,” said Freeman.

Chancellor Freeman has just started his second year with the university and he says the mission couldn’t be more clear to help the students excel to the next level.

‘I’m having a lot of fun in this position and really beginning to make it my own and having fun getting to know the faculty staff and students who are here. so, it’s been a great experience for me as well,” said Chancellor Freeman.

One sophomore at UTM talked about his experience on campus.

“The professors..they all care, every staff cares, they’re really nice, they’re always willing to help. You will never find anyone rude here. Everyone’s always willing to let you in..let you participate and it’s just a very welcoming community. Go Skyhawks!,” said UTM Sophomore Enzo Gutierrez.

The Skyhawks aim to soar to their potential as the students wrap up welcome week and get ready for the start of the semester.
