Officials provide follow up to fire at Gerdau Steel Mill

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — On Saturday August 24, a large fire occurred at Gerdau Steel House.

We spoke to Madison County Fire Chief Eric Turner who told us that they were informed of the fire by Gerdau reporting a fire on the premises.

The department then dispatched it out as a commercial fire.

The first units saw the smoke before arrival and then discovered a large area of fire when they arrived to the scene.

Turner said there were between 40-45 firemen and about 12 fire apparatus on the scene.

Several firemen experienced heat exhaustion and light smoke inhalation. They were all treated on the scene by med center ems.

It took about 2 and a half hours to get the fire controlled and the department was on the scene for about 6 and a half hours.

“There were no other structures or anything outside of that landfill area in danger. It was just a matter of getting it contained where we could put it out. Obviously, we couldn’t have done this without the med center EMS’s help with taking care of our folks. Also, the cooperation and help that we had with Gerdau with bringing in their heavy equipment, bulldozers and such and helping us move equipment around as we extinguished it,” said Turner.

According to a statement released by Gerdau, who confirmed the fire in their landfill area, they wish to thank the first responders from the fire department for their assistance.

They also stated that no injuries occurred, no equipment was damaged and that normal operations have resumed.
